Our purpose is to benefit all Western Australians by promoting strong economic outcomes through effective regulation and decision making. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to supporting and building a culturally diverse workforce and workplace culture that values diversity and inclusion.

We welcome and encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, young people, people of diverse sexualities and genders, people with disabilities, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

About the Role

The ERA is seeking a passionate professional to join us on a permanent basis as the Assistant Director of Market Regulation within the Energy Markets division.

The electricity sector is central to Western Australia’s efforts to address climate change. ERA is responsible for regulating elements of Western Australia’s wholesale electricity market as it navigates decarbonisation of the sector.

The ERA has a strong workplace culture of innovation, working with integrity, striving for excellence, and capability building. Our people are from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, intelligent, passionate and committed, and provide a supportive, collaborative, and collegiate team operating environment. We offer genuine workplace flexibility.

This position provides strategic leadership and specialist expertise in managing and delivering a range of highly complex, high value projects for the ERA’s Wholesale Electricity Market and other energy market related functions.

As Assistant Director, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Western Australia’s energy sector. Working collaboratively with other Assistant Directors, you will lead and coordinate the Division’s efforts in monitoring compliance, investigating market conduct, and delivering high-quality research and analysis. You will help ensure the integrity and effective functioning of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) by identifying potential market issues and contributing to strategic initiatives that drive continuous improvement in market regulation and policy development.

In this role, you will lead the development of robust, evidence-based recommendations and determinations that influence market outcomes and regulatory decisions. You will provide expert economic advice and insight on energy market dynamics to senior management, the Executive Director, and the ERA’s Governing Body. Your work will directly support the evolution of energy regulation in WA, ensuring energy markets operate efficiently, transparently, and in the public interest — at a time when the sector is undergoing a historic and vital transition to a more sustainable future.

Managing a team of eight employees, you will be responsible for mentoring and coaching them to achieve high performance outcomes while fostering a supportive and growth-oriented culture.

Ideal candidates should possess excellent knowledge and experience in leading project teams for highly complex, high risk, and sensitive policy and regulatory issues. They should have demonstrated experience in policy formulation and strategy development, as well as in managing and enhancing stakeholder relationships in a regulatory or similar environment.

A full description of the role and organisational context is included in the attached Job Description Form.
