The Role

As a Special Needs Education Assistant, you will assist in education programs and promote a supportive and inclusive learning environment, working with teachers and the Learning Support Coordinator. This will include assisting teaching staff to develop and provide learning adjustments and accommodations to assist students to reach their full potential through the development of their academic, social and emotional skills, including the effective use of computers and digital technologies.

The successful applicant will ideally have a high level of interpersonal and communication skills and work collaboratively with staff members to meet the needs of students. You should be well organised, use your initiative, and implement teacher-planned strategies that scaffold learning and reinforce learning routines. You will assist teachers to adapt resources to improve accessibility and support students to organise their work, manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and develop the independence, self-management, and problem-solving skills needed for successful learning.

Within this role, you will provide feedback, when required, on education programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of student goals. Ideally, you will possess the knowledge and experience in working with students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties, as well as the ability to support student growth, both academically and socially, within the classroom setting.

  1. Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  2. Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  3. Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
