About the role

The role provides scientific expertise and technical leadership to the WAM Genetic Resources (GR) Unit and tissue collection facility. This includes managing the WA Museum faunal tissue collection and the Genetic Resources laboratory and its staff, and overseeing the curation and assembly of the DNA Sequence library. The position is to support the genetic research undertaken by Museum Curators and their external collaborators.

We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual, who enjoys a challenge and wants to make a difference.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Advise internal museum staff and external clients in scoping genetics-based project requests.
  • Co-ordinate expert-level completion of services related to the generation of genetic sequence data.
  • Manage technical staffing needs, including direct supervision and training of GR and Museum technical staff and students; this includes the creation and maintenance of workflows and communicating with clients regarding any updates and changes to project timelines.
  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of Genetic analysis instrumentation and related software relevant to taxonomic research. Provide hands-on support when necessary.
  • Manage and organise sequence data to maximise accessibility for researchers and external public digital platforms.
  • Manage the Science Tissue Collection currently held in a bank of ultra freezers, in conjunction with the relevant Curators.
  • Manage all financial aspects of operating the Genetic Resources team and laboratory.
  • Manage equipment purchases and maintenance, and the central purchase of consumables.
  • Initiate and develop policy-related to Genetics Research and Tissue collections.
  • Co-ordinate the safe and effective operation of the Genetic Resources laboratory at the Collections and Research Centre in Welshpool, WA.
  • Review and maintain current knowledge of research in the field of Genetics.

Eligibility to Apply
