About Aboriginal History Western Australia (AHWA)

AHWA is responsible under the State Records Act 2000 for managing access to restricted records created by the Aboriginal Affairs Planning Authority and its predecessor agencies. AHWA provides specialised research services to assist Aboriginal Western Australians seeking their personal and family history information. The unit also undertakes special projects to increase understanding of the shared history of Western Australia and contribute to reconciliation.

AHWA provides dedicated research services to help Aboriginal Western Australians trace their personal and family histories. AHWA manages access to restricted records created by former State Government departments responsible for Aboriginal Affairs up to the 1970s. These records are essential for responding to individual research requests. These records are also critical in supporting redress schemes supported by the WA Government.

About the role

The Stolen Generations Redress Scheme (the Scheme) was announced by the Premier of Western Australia and is in recognition of the harm and trauma caused by the removal of children from their families, communities, culture and Country.

AHWA is managing the research component of the Scheme. A specialist research team has been established within AHWA to respond to requests from the Scheme, including assessing applications against available records to determine eligibility.

The suitable candidate should demonstrate considerable experience in effectively and sensitively communicating with Aboriginal Australians and/or diverse customer groups.

The Level 5 Senior Research Officer will undertake research in response to requests received from the Scheme. The position will assist in reviewing, monitoring and assessing outgoing responses to ensure these are accurate and comply with policy and legislation. It will provide timely, accurate and reliable advice and assistance to senior management, clients and government agencies on the Aboriginal History Research Services (AHRS) process, access and policy matters.

The Level 4 Research Officer undertakes research and assists in preparing responses to Aboriginal family history inquiries and other research requests received by the Unit. In addition, the officer conducts research to support strategic projects led by Aboriginal History WA (AHWA), as required.

The Level 3 Research and Administration Officer are responsible for receiving and processing incoming Aboriginal History Research Services (AHRS) requests. This includes vetting and conducting preliminary research in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policies, ensuring that all requests are managed efficiently and appropriately.

We currently have one Level 5, two Level 4 and one Level 3 fixed term, full time (75hrs p/f) positions available with the possibility of subsequent contracts and/or permanency.

This is a multilevel pool and will be used to fill any Level 3, Level 4, and Level 5 positions that may come up in AHWA over the next 24 months.

For further job-related information, please contact Nadia Khalil, A/Director Aboriginal History WA on (08) 9427 3475 (only contact for information about the role).
