About the role

With a commitment to growing and developing our workforce, our Safety Development Program (SDP) is an opportunity for you to build a career in rail safety. Over the course of the SDP, you will undertake a range of rail safety work (including Protection Officer duties) and placements, whilst also receiving on-the-job and off-the job training to develop expertise in rail safety.

Whilst completing Stage 1 of the Program, you will be employed on a fixed term basis as a Trainee Safety Officer (Rail) Level 3. Upon successful completion of Stage 1, you will be eligible for permanent appointment with the PTA and given the option to complete Stage 2 of the Program, during which you will also complete a relevant nationally accredited qualification (Certificate IV). Upon successful completion of Stage 2, you will be permanently appointed as an Assistant Safety Officer (Rail) Level 4. Further details about the SDP can be found in the attached FAQs.

We currently have several Perth-based opportunities available on this Program, which is scheduled to commence late August 2026.

About You!

This is a great opportunity for people with some experience in rail looking to pursue a career in rail safety. As a Trainee Safety Officer (Rail), you will have:

  • A current PTA Protection Officer Level 1, Operations Officer (OO) or Supervised Worker Track Access Permit (or equivalent from another rail jurisdiction)
  • Experience undertaking rail safety activities within a railway environment
  • A current unrestricted Western Australian ‘C’ Class Driver’s licence You will also be:
  • Committed to safety
  • A good communicator and team player
  • Keen to learn
  • Willing to work unsociable and irregular hours, including shift work and weekends

There are currently three fixed term opportunities available 24/08/2026 with the possibility of renewal and/or permanency. Applicants assessed as suitable through this process may be used to fill similar vacancies on a fixed term or permanent basis that may arise within the next 12 months.

Although preference will be given to candidates who are Australian permanent residents or are Australian/New Zealand citizens, we may consider candidates who possess temporary working visas. Temporary working visas must allow you to reside and work full time in Australia until 25 August 2028. Applicants must possess an appropriate visa at the time of application and also be eligible for a permanent visa in order to be eligible for permanency post program (Student visas are not eligible).
