About the role
This role presents an exciting opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the young people in the Geraldton community.
This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for someone with a commitment to social justice to join the new Legal Aid Youth Bail Service, Geraldton. This new service assists children aged 10 to 18 involved in the criminal justice system to access practical supports that improve their chances of being granted bail, and to help them comply with their bail conditions and stay out of trouble while they are on bail.
A paralegal in this service will work alongside the Youth Bail Support Worker as well as the lawyers in the Geraldton Legal Aid office. They will provide intake, triage and administrative support, as well as providing assistance to young clients and their families through home visits, transport, referrals, bail reminders, community legal education and practical assistance. They will also contribute to the development of this new service by engaging with the local community, and building working relationships with likeminded organisations in the local area.
About you
The ideal candidates will:
- enjoy working with young people, including outside of an office environment;
- have a knowledge of criminal law and procedure, or able to learn on the job;
- have excellent interpersonal and administrative skills,
- be able to build rapport and trust with young people and their families,
- be able to collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders, and to build strong working relationships,
- demonstrate a high level of personal integrity; and
- have a strong desire to improve the lives of young people in the criminal justice system.
