As a Chief Pilot (Rotary Wing) with the Western Australia Police Force (WA Police Force) you will gain a range of training and experiences that are not available with other employers. You will have the opportunity to support the Tactical Response Group (TRG), assist police patrols and winch in night operations using Night Vision Goggles; Be involved in tactical flying operations with the TRG including assaults and live fire missions; Assist the Water Police and perform Search and Rescue roles on both land and sea throughout the State; Conduct day and night patrols to assist police on the ground, detect traffic offenders and locate stolen cars; Conduct drug detection and eradication operations; Be involved in air surveillance operations and K9 transport and deployment.
The successful applicant will be critical in the successful entry into service of 2 new Airbus H145 D3 helicopters currently under procurement and expected to be delivered in 2023, and may be required to travel to Germany to undergo type training upon appointment.
This shift work position operates on a rotational roster basis and includes night, day, afternoon, weekend and public holiday shifts. The payment of shift penalties will apply.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
As a senior leader of Police Air Wing (PAW), the position ensures the safe operation of the rotary wing aircraft, and holds the “Key Personnel” position of Chief Pilot (Rotary Wing) in accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) legislative requirements. The Chief Pilot works closely with the Aviation Manager and Officer in Charge (OIC) as a member of the executive team to ensure a cohesive and team oriented approach to the operations of the PAW.
SPECIALIST PRE-REQUISITES
It is a requirement that the successful applicant:
- Be an Australian Citizen prior to the completion of the selection process
- Is successful in obtaining and maintaining a NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 1 security clearance for the duration of their appointment in the position
- Undertake a psychological assessment and may be required to undergo a flight assessment to determine their suitability for this position
- Is successful in obtaining and maintaining CASA approval as the Chief Pilot ‘key personnel’ role for WA Police Force Rotary Wing Operations in accordance with CASA regulatory requirements and Police Air Wing Operations Manual
- Maintains skills and qualifications relevant to the position in accordance with CASA regulatory requirements and PAW Operations Manual
- Is in possession of a Commercial Pilot License (helicopter) issued pursuant to CASR Part 61
- Is the holder of a Night Vision Imaging Systems Rating (NVIS) (Civil or military)
- Possesses a current Australian Class 1 Aviation Medical
APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants are asked to address the following nominated work related requirements:
Essential:
- Minimum 12 months experience in commercial operations
- Holder of a Multi Engine Instrument Rating (Helicopter). Completed at least 3 Command Instrument Rating Proficiency Checks (IPC) or military equivalent
- 2000 hours total helicopter experience of which 1000 hours must be Pilot in Command (PIC) and 500 hours must be as PIC of a twin engine helicopter
- Holder of a CASA Part 61 Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter)
Applicants are also required to submit a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV). Your CV should provide enough detail (dot points are sufficient) to allow the selection panel to assess your skills, experience and qualifications relevant to the Key Accountabilities of the attached Position Description Form.
The CV must also include the names and contact details of two (2) referees who can comment on the applicant’s ability to satisfy all of the Essential Work Related Requirements. Applicants should nominate at least one immediate (most contemporary) supervisor/manager unless exceptional circumstances exist.

OTHER CONDITIONS
Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies throughout the Police Air Wing. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position, then the panel may select another suitable applicant from this selection process. Both of these options remain valid for a period of twelve (12) months from the initial date of the appointment.
Integrity and criminal checks will be conducted if the recommended applicant for a position is not a current WA Police Force employee. Any relocation costs associated with appointment to these positions may be the responsibility of the successful applicants.
