Art Gallery of Western Australia

Curator Indigenous Art and Head of Indigenous Engagement

Specified Calling Level 2 $95,548 -$105,179

Position Number: 10109

The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) is the State’s premier Art Museum. Situated in the heart of Perth’s Cultural Centre, the Main and Centenary Galleries house the State Art Collection of over 18,300 works by renowned local and international artists from the 1800’s to today, including approximately 3,000 Aboriginal works. In 2020, the Gallery celebrated 125 years of operation.

2021 will see a revitalised AGWA with the completion of its new rooftop development and ground floor works. The new rooftop provides the largest commercially available rooftop venue in the State, a new roof level internal galley, a new sculpture walk featuring significant works from the State Art Collection, a new bar, and a magnificent 35 metre x 5 metre commission from Minang-Noongar artist Christopher Pease as its focal point.

We are committed to developing an equitable and diverse workforce that is representative of the Western Australian community at all levels of employment.

Indigenous Australians, young people, people with disabilities and people from culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for positions at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Location

This position is located in central Perth within the Cultural Centre hub close to the bustling café, tourist and shopping districts.

About the position: The Art Gallery of Western Australia is seeking a senior art museum professional to fill the position of Curator Indigenous Art and Head of Indigenous Engagement. The successful candidate will join a revitalised Gallery which in 2021 is undertaking major capital upgrades, the launch of a new AGWA brand, new digital channels, a new design store, a new entrance way, a new AGWA Paper, and the launch of a new Institute of Asian Contemporary Art supported by the Simon Lee Foundation.

Possessing extensive knowledge of Indigenous art history and strong Indigenous and international connections, the successful candidate will be responsible for curating and building the State Art Collection’s Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander holdings, undertaking extensive research, and delivering innovative live and digital programs in multi-disciplinary teams.  The Curator Indigenous Art and Head of Indigenous Engagement will be a member of the AGWA Executive and report to the AGWA Director. In addition to curatorial work, the position will lead our engagement with the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community and advise on matters across the organisation to advance and champion Indigenous perspectives across all aspects of the Gallery.

We are looking for a highly motivated person to help us challenge what a contemporary art museum can be and can offer. In return we offer a fast-moving environment where innovation and ideas are encouraged.
