The Kimberley region is the most northern region of Western Australia encompassing an area of 424, 517kms. The Department of Education has 23 schools located across the Kimberley with regional offices located in the East and West Kimberley.

The Role and our Branch

The Principal Consultant Two-way Science will be responsible for the development, implementation and management of the Department’s Two-way Science Initiative Phase 1 - Proof of concept. Based at Kimberley Education Regional Office in Broome, this position is part of the Curriculum Priorities branch of the Teaching Quality and Innovation Directorate of Statewide Services.

The Statewide Services division provides the services and supports required by schools to enable student achievement, with a focus on those students and schools that need it most. The directorate builds the professional capability of schools to improve student achievement by enabling teaching and learning excellence.

Two-way Science is an approach to teaching and learning that connects the Western Australian Curriculum: Science to Aboriginal knowledge’s. Two-way Science supports schools to build relationships with local Aboriginal communities to develop place-based culturally responsive teaching and learning programs for primary and secondary school students. The foundation of a Two-way Science learning program is cultural and ecological knowledge taught by local Aboriginal people to students on country and in the classroom.

Two-way Science provides an opportunity for all students to learn about science from the world’s oldest continuing cultures, to strengthen Aboriginal student wellbeing and engagement, and to build respect for Aboriginal histories, cultures, people, knowledge’s and experiences amongst school staff and students.

The Principal Consultant Two-way Science will support five Two-way Science Project Schools in the Kimberley region: Broome Senior High School, Fitzroy Valley District High School, La Grange Remote Community School, One Arm Point Remote Community School and Djugerari Remote Community School. This will include active involvement in on-country activities with teachers and students.

The Principal Consultant Two-way Science will also develop strategic partnerships with local organisations including the Kimberley Land Council’s Two-way Science Indigenous Ranger and school education partnerships project.

  5. Demonstrated highly developed written communication skills, including extensive experience in the preparation of correspondence, reports, Ministerial communication, briefing notes and policy.
  6. Demonstrated highly developed strategic planning skills with a proven ability to coordinate, deliver and evaluate strategic outcomes.

Eligibility and Training Requirements

Employees will be required to:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identification and recognition is considered essential for this position under section 50(d) of the Western Australian Equal Opportunity Act

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • hold and maintain a current ‘C’ or ‘C.A.’ class drivers’ licence
  • undertake travel throughout the state, including overnight stays in non-metropolitan locations and travelling in small aeroplanes to remote locations as required
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
  • complete
    • the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
    • training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
    • the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
