The Organisation
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is Western Australia’s primary water and environmental regulator. Headquartered in Joondalup with some 1200 staff located across the state, its vision is for a low-carbon Western Australia with a healthy environment and secure resources for future generations.
With a new strategic plan in place, the Department has embarked on an exciting multi-year reform agenda with a focus on climate action, major project approvals, new water legislation, native vegetation policy, and embedding Aboriginal knowledge and insights in all facets of the Department’s decision making. Transformation of the Department’s financial, digital and people management systems and processes to support delivery of the highest quality services to people within and outside the Department is also a feature of the reform agenda.
The strategic plan and associated reform agenda are being enabled by a new portfolio-based operating model and the establishment of three new Deputy Directors General positions. We are also recruiting for a Deputy Director General Approvals and Deputy Director General Strategy and Performance. Together with the Director General, these new positions will make up the Corporate Executive responsible for the leadership of the Department.

The Opportunity
This is a unique opportunity to join a newly established Corporate Executive and report to a Director General who has built a reputation as an inspirational leader. The Deputy Director General Climate and Sustainability is responsible for the development of the Agency’s long term, integrated and big picture vision and strategy on climate and sustainability (biodiversity, air, water, and waste) that provides guidance to decision makers, sets parameters for policy setting for the long term and ensures the Agency is positioned well to respond to future emerging issues. This opportunity is for an initial period of one year while the formal classification process is completed. The position is also responsible for leading the provision of expert environmental advice and services to several boards and committees, including the Environmental Protection Authority and the Waste Authority.
Your experience
- This role would be suited to applicants from either the public or private sector and applications from individuals seeking the next step in their career, or individuals looking to fulfil a role that will truly make a difference to the community of Western Australia would be welcomed.
- You will need to demonstrate experience shaping organisational strategy, of building commitment to a shared vision and of building organisational capability and responsiveness in a large, complex organisation along with a solid understanding of climate, environment and sustainability issues is fundamental to success.
- Your history of leading and motivating high performing teams and holding them accountable for delivering agreed priorities in a resource-constrained environments will be critical to your success.
- Proven success in securing buy-in and support from key internal clients and external stakeholders in complex and ambiguous internal and external contexts.
