The Opportunity
The Department is seeking individuals with varied skill sets to fill Natural Resource Management Officer (NRMO) and Senior Natural Resource Management Officer (SNRMO) positions across a number of key regional programs:
Planning Advice Program
Integrates land and water planning by providing advice on regional and local planning schemes, strategies and referrals, infrastructure assessments including major and significant projects; provides specialist water advice for development including expanding urban centres and industry; reviews industry proposals; implements water source protection policy for public drinking water sources; provides advice on protection of surface water and groundwater resources.
Water Licensing Program
Delivers water licensing activities by engaging with stakeholders, consistent with legislation and policy to support supply planning, allocation planning, and water licensing compliance and enforcement functions. Key water licensing activities include assessing surface water and groundwater licence application proposals, issuing permits to construct groundwater wells and to disturb bed and banks of watercourses, reviewing regulatory policy and standards, providing advice on proposals involving significant water use and disputes on water availability. Project management and co-ordination of small teams of experts for complex water use proposals.
Rural Water Planning
Manages programs to assist rural communities in the dryland agricultural area to develop reliable and sustainable non-potable community supplies to support regional growth. Supplies are developed or enhanced through funding opportunities, rebate programs and capital works projects. Building on the Strategic Community Water Supply network which exists across the dryland agricultural area for community use including livestock and firefighting needs, reducing use of expensive scheme water for non-potable activities such as townscape irrigation.
Water Measurement Program
Focuses on hydrographic and water resource monitoring to understand condition and characteristics of water resources. It improves and maintains the department’s water measurement assets to deliver quality and timely data across the department’s state-wide measurement network. This includes stream flow gauging stations, rainfall sites, groundwater monitoring programs and water quality monitoring projects for priority regional estuaries and catchments. Keeping abreast of evolving hydrographic technology, the program collects water data in remote areas and is responsive to events, including fish kills, algae blooms, flooding and disputes over reduced flow.
