Perth Zoo has a great opportunity available to join the Australian Fauna team with a focus on reptiles. Applicants with experience working with dangerous reptiles, specifically venomous snakes and crocodiles will be viewed favourably.
This position requires the incumbent to work with dangerous reptiles, specifically venomous snakes and crocodiles, as such we are seeking someone with experience in these taxa and a demonstrated understanding of and experience in the application of safe working practices for these taxa. The position will also be required to deliver keeper talks to the public, undertake animal training and work with the diverse collection including reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, birds and mammals. The role is full-time, working a shift roster including weekends and public holidays.
Please note that whilst we are recruiting for this section currently, you may be required to work in other sections across Life Sciences as operationally required.
(Applicants deemed suitable but not successful on this occasion, may be considered for similar roles working with reptiles that arise within the next 12 months).

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The role of this position is to work under general direction as an effective member of the Life Sciences team providing the highest level of care, husbandry and health monitoring of a broad range of section taxa in the Perth Zoo collection. Proficiency and competencies are measured against the Zoo’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Essential:
- Certificate III in Zoo Keeping or Captive Animal Management or equivalent.
- Knowledge of animals, their biology and ecological threats.
- Applied knowledge and experience in animal husbandry, animal observation and animal management in a zoo or similar environment.
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a team and to communicate well verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated understanding of and experience in the application of the principles of safety in the workplace.
- Demonstrated commitment to conservation and the communication of a biodiversity ethos to the public.
Desirable:
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Experience in supporting or conducting research projects.
- Knowledge of and commitment to conservation consistent with the role of Zoos.
