This is a twelve (12) month fixed term, part-time (0.6FTE) position commencing Term 3, 2024 with possible extension 

Challis Community Primary School (CPS) is looking to appoint a caring Social Worker to join their team.

The successful applicant would be responsible for undertaking assessment of referred students, preparing plans and undertaking social work intervention with students, families and groups.  They would also be required to interview parents and/or guardians, as well as obtain and evaluate case information from all relevant sources, this could include making home visits when necessary.

Challis CPS is situated in Armadale and has set an ambitious improvement agenda over the next five years. The school has developed the Challis Parenting and Early Learning Centre which is an integrated, multi-agency service focused on early learning and parenting support. From birth through to Kindergarten enrolment, the school works with parents and their young children using a variety of strategies and programs to ensure optimal attachment and high quality early learning experiences.

The school attracts and retains experienced, caring and innovative staff who provide a range of high quality learning opportunities that stimulate and challenge the individual needs and talents of students. This is done within a collaborative school culture, creating an integrated approach to program development and a strong sense of collegiality. The school’s focus on individual student needs and abilities is achieved through maintaining strong partnerships with parents and the wider community.

The school offers an array of health, welfare and education services that meet the changing and diverse needs of the school community. These services aim to engage parents and provide support for children from birth to Year 6, including the transition to high school.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Sound verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to identify and clarify issues and problems and generate strategies to address them.
  • Knowledge of school systems and operations and skills in working with a multi-disciplinary team setting.
  • Skills and experience working with children and families

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • possess a degree in Social Work and be eligible for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
