About the Role
We are seeking enthusiastic and invested students currently studying a bachelor’s degree of Electrical or Electronic Engineering at a Western Australian university.
The Cadetship is offered to students studying their 2nd or 3rd year of studies in 2026 and offers:
- Tuition Fee Support - Main Roads will pay the compulsory tuition fees directly to your university for your enrolled units at the beginning of each semester for the term of your Cadetship.
- Paid Study (Sustenance Allowance) - to assist you in focusing on your full-time studies. We will pay you a fortnightly sustenance allowance.
- Vacation Work – We will provide you with paid summer vacation employment, where you will gain hands-on practical experience
Upon the successful completion of your Electrical or Electronic Engineering Degree, you will join our three (3) year rotational Engineering Graduate Program.
We are looking for Cadets to join our 2026 intake with your first paid vacation work commencing in November 2026.

Menno Henneveld Scholarship – Regional Based applicants
Menno Henneveld was the Commissioner of Main Roads from 2002-2012. Menno’s legacy to our organisation was his focus on leadership and values, and his support and commitment to our regions. He was an advocate for developing our future workforce which saw a significant growth in our graduate programs during his tenure as Commissioner.
To honour Menno’s memory, we are offering the ‘Menno Henneveld Scholarship’ to regionally based students. The scholarship provides additional financial support to the cadetship and includes:
- A higher fortnightly sustenance allowance, for living away from your ordinary place of residence in the region
- Special Supplementary Allowance to assist with the cost of accommodation in Perth
Eligible applicants of the Menno Henneveld scholarship:
- Will be living away from home, for study purposes, with home being more than 40km from Perth
- Successful in receiving a cadetship with Main Roads

To be considered for our Engineering Cadetship (Electrical), you must be;
- An Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Have already completed your 1st year of your Bachelor of Electrical or Electronic Engineering at a Western Australian university
- A full-time student
Please submit the following documentation as part of your application:
- A brief CV
- A copy of your most current academic results in your Bachelor of Electrical or Electronic Engineering
- A copy of your current WA motor vehicle (car) Driver’s Licence (or an approved equivalent)
- Proof of Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency
- A cover letter outlining why you are interested in working for the Main Roads Engineering Cadet (Electrical) Program, and provide an example of how you demonstrate the following qualities:
- When you have worked in a team environment creating successful outcomes
- Used your communication skills through work, university or other areas to clearly explain a situation or task.
- Ability to solve a problem or problems in a workplace, university or other areas you have experienced.
Please ensure your cover letter does not exceed two (2) pages.
Successful applicants will need to complete a pre-employment medical questionnaire prior to appointment.
Please note: Successful applicants for the Cadetship will be bonded to Main Roads (duration to be confirmed prior to appointment) and will required to join the Graduate program upon completion of the Cadetship. Electrical engineering graduates are required to complete a pre-employment medical assessment prior to commencing the Graduate program and will be required to hold a WA Driver’s Licence.
