About the Job

Do you love working in the rail industry, but ready to take the next step in your career?

Want the opportunity to earn whilst you learn?

Western Australia’s public transport system is recognised as the best in Australia and is one of the most efficient, clean and safe networks in the world.  Rail transport is vital for our continued success and growth through our many projects including METRONET to meet the public’s needs and expectations.  Moving millions of people needs the skill and commitment of a talented workforce.

About this opportunity

With a commitment to growing and developing our workforce, our new Safety Development Program (SDP) is an opportunity for you to build a career in rail safety.  Over the course of the SDP, you will undertake a range of rail safety work (including Protection Officer duties) and placements, whilst also receiving on-the-job and off-the job training to develop expertise in rail safety.

Whilst completing Stage 1 of the Program, you will be employed on a fixed term basis as a Trainee Safety Officer (Rail) Level 3. Upon successful completion of Stage 1, you will be eligible for permanent appointment with the PTA and given the option to complete Stage 2 of the Program, during which you will also complete a relevant nationally accredited qualification (Certificate IV).  Upon successful completion of Stage 2, you will be permanently appointed as an Assistant Safety Officer (Rail) Level 4.  Further details about the SDP can be found in the attached FAQs.

We currently have several Perth-based opportunities available on this Program, which is scheduled to commence in June 2025.

What do I need to join the Safety Development Program

This is a great opportunity for people with some experience in rail looking to pursue a career in rail safety.  As a Trainee Safety Officer (Rail), you will have:

  • Experience undertaking rail safety activities within a railway environment
  • A current unrestricted Western Australian ‘C’ Class Driver’s licence

You will also be:

  • Committed to safety
  • A good communicator and team player
  • Keen to learn
  • Willing to work unsociable and irregular hours, including shift work and weekends.

The Job Description Form, FAQs and Job Information Package provide further details about the duties and selection criteria relevant to this opportunity.

Please note:

As part of the selection process, you must:

  • Be prepared to provide a national police clearance and complete a pre-employment medical assessment (including drug and alcohol screening)
  • Must be available to attend all stages of the recruitment process (including aptitude testing)

To be eligible to work at the PTA you must be either an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident or hold a valid work visa for the length of the position advertised.

The PTA is an equal opportunity employer. As a measure to achieve equality under sections 51 and 31 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and women who meet the requirements of the position may be prioritised for appointment.
