About the role

Join the Public Transport Authority (PTA) as we shape the future of rail! We are seeking innovative Principal and Mechanical Engineers to enhance our rollingstock engineering team. In the Principal Engineer role, you will provide specialist support, lead the team, and ensure the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of our rollingstock assets while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.

As a Principal Engineer, you'll develop Asset Management Plans, manage multi-disciplinary projects, and coordinate with contractors to optimize performance and foster a culture of continuous improvement. Your leadership will be essential in driving innovations that enhance safety and reliability across our rail operations.

In the Mechanical Engineer position, you will oversee the acquisition, design, modification, and maintenance of rollingstock, manage outsourced contracts, and assist with fault diagnosis and compliance. Ideal candidates will have an engineering degree, experience in passenger rollingstock and rail safety, strong leadership skills, and proficiency in relevant engineering software. About you!

To excel in the Principal Engineer role, you should possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, with eligibility for professional membership in the Institute of Engineers Australia and a willingness to work towards chartered status.
  • Proven experience in passenger rollingstock, rail industry safety standards, and relevant legislation, along with strong contract and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage staff, consultants, and contractors, including mentoring and providing clear direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to build positive relationships, work well in teams, and negotiate effectively.
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

To excel in Mechanical Engineer role, you should possess:

  • A relevant Mechanical/Mechatronics engineering degree and membership with the Institute of Engineers (Australia) as a Professional Engineer (MIEAust), or extensive experience in mechanical engineering and rollingstock maintenance.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design software (e.g., Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD) and MS Office applications.
  • Proven experience in contract and project management, with strong leadership abilities to guide multi-disciplinary teams and effectively manage resources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Advanced conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including experience in root cause analysis and risk assessments.
