About our Directorate:
Located at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH), our Pastoral Care Service ensures compassionate and professional spiritual support for patients, families, staff, and caregivers of all beliefs.
We embrace Western Australia’s diverse cultures and actively engage with people of all beliefs, faiths and traditions including those who are not religious but would like to access pastoral care support.
Our Pastoral Carers serve all clinical areas, tailoring services to meet individual or group spiritual needs. This includes emotional support, companionship, prayer, religious practices, and referrals. The compassion of our Pastoral Carers for all healthcare workers enhances CAHS staff performance and wellbeing.
In addition, PCH's Multi-faith Centre offers a tranquil space for prayer, reflection, and counselling, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds.
Position Profile and Role:
As a Pastoral Carer you will counsel patients and healthcare workers when needed and particularly at times of crisis. Your empathy, life experience, and professional frameworks will guide your response to individual needs, recognising different values, beliefs and faith backgrounds, without agenda.
Recognising the importance of spiritual care within our holistic approach to health and wellbeing, you will be flexible in adapting your style from being a listening ear, through to assisting the larger multi-disciplinary team providing patient-care. Your professional experience will help you to balance challenging moments with celebrating positive health progress.
In this dual-facing role you'll also assist in staff wellness and well-being as part of the Work, Health, Safety & Wellbeing team, and contribute to relevant procedures and programmes as needed.
This role suits an individual who is able to meet children, families and staff where they are on their journey, build trust and create a safe space for conversation and support. We encourage applications from people of all cultural and spiritual backgrounds who possess skills and experience across the following areas:
- Tertiary qualification (or progress towards) in Theology, Religious studies, Pastoral studies, Chaplaincy, Spirituality or Divinity; Counselling, Social Work or Psychology (or another related area relevant to the delivery of pastoral care).
- Experience providing socio-emotional care to people from a breadth of faith, cultural and social backgrounds, experiencing ill health, bereavement or other challenging life events.
- Understanding of professional practice, boundaries and ethics.
Previous health sector experience is not essential.
