About the Work Areas

Our diverse work areas undertake a broad range of exciting and critical work which you will have exposure to throughout your Graduate journey. This may include:

  • Playing a pivotal role in supporting agencies with budget submissions through the provision of policy advice, providing fresh perspectives on budget submissions, analysis of budget/financial positions and providing input into the State Budget and Mid-Year review processes across a wide range of portfolios (eg justice, health, law, education/training, utilities, housing, financial entities);
  • Providing input into State financial reporting and publications;
  • Contributing to key government projects eg Westport, Women and Newborn Hospital, Climate resilience and decarbonisation, Economic diversification, and improving outcomes for Aboriginal people and communities through Closing the Gap initiatives and Native Title;
  • Undertaking research projects, analysis and forecasting of current economic issues eg Productivity Reform, Impact of Iron Ore prices, Consumption and Trade, Housing market;
  • Providing analysis and input into Commonwealth funding agreements, Federal Financial relations, and GST matters; and
  • Development of cost and demand data models, assessment of costs and funding, and software development/enhancements eg SIMS.

About the Program

Our program is the start of an exciting career where you will be involved in three (6-month) rotations across different work areas in Treasury, with the potential for a rotation to Western Australian Treasury Corporation (WATC).  During the 18- month structured program you will work on individual and team-based projects which will allow you to develop intricate knowledge of Treasury work areas and be exposed to high impact, meaningful and challenging State projects and work. 

As a Graduate Officer you will be involved in supporting key government decision making across an extensive range of public policy issues by undertaking research, providing high quality, timely and evidenced-based analysis and advice, anticipating issues and contributing to complex policy challenges.  You will be required to prepare high level correspondence (eg briefing notes) and present findings and information to Treasury leadership. 

You will work in partnership with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including Treasury Executive, Managers and Directors, other public sector agencies, and peak industry groups to make a real difference.

We are looking to fill up to 10 graduate positions who will commence in January 2024. Other suitable applicants will be placed in an appointment pool that will run for a period of 12 months and may be used to fill other similar fixed-term and permanent vacancies.

About You

We are looking for Graduates who like solving complex issues that stretch your thinking and challenge you every day.  What we do at Treasury is diverse, so we are looking for resilient people from a broad range of disciplines, skills, abilities and backgrounds to represent the communities and public sector agencies impacted by our work.   You will also:

  • Be adaptable and flexible and have a desire to learn
  • Have an interest in data, research, information and evidence
  • Work collaboratively with others to develop solutions through analysis and creative thinking
  • Possess a tertiary qualification in a relevant area (Accounting and Finance, Commerce, Business, Economics, Law, Public Policy, International Relations or Data Science/Mathematics). Other qualifications will also be considered. 

To be eligible, you must be able to demonstrate all of the following:

  1. Successful completion of a recent tertiary qualification, with a completion date between December 2021 to December 2023. Your tertiary qualification must be a minimum of a three (3) year undergraduate degree
  2. High academic achievement (Weighted Average Mark of 70% or above)
  3. Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency
  4. Alignment with the Treasury capabilities as per the attached Level 3 Capability Framework and Role Statement. You will also need to align with Treasury’s values of Solutions Focused, Working Collaboratively, Committed People and Making a Difference.
