Aboriginal University Students - we want you!

Are you interested in gaining valuable paid work experience and the opportunity to apply your studies to a career in health? Then join the WA Health Aboriginal Cadetship Program in 2023.

We are currently looking for dedicated and self-motivated Aboriginal university students from a range of academic disciplines and degrees to join our 2023 Aboriginal Cadetship Program. The Cadetship Program offers students the opportunity to earn an income and gain valuable work experience whilst studying an undergraduate degree.

Eligibility to Apply: Pursuant of Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, the occupant of this position must be of Aboriginal descent.

All WA health system employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (including the booster vaccination when they are eligible) in order to access health care facilities, pursuant to the Health Worker (Restrictions on Access) Directions (HWD) (or its replacement), COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination and Vaccination Program Policy, and the Booster Vaccination (Restriction on Access) Directions (no 2) (or its replacement) (BVD), unless the employee is exempt pursuant to the HWD and/or BVD.

Additionally, if an employee is working in a residential aged care facility, they must comply with the Residential Aged Care Facility Worker Access Directions No 4 (or its replacement).

What is the WA Health Aboriginal Cadetship Program?

The Aboriginal Cadetship Program is an employment program that offers Aboriginal university students the opportunity to develop job ready skills and abilities, establish personal and professional support networks while laying the foundations for a career in the WA public health sector.

What does the Program offer?

  • A 12-month, part time contract of employment as an Aboriginal cadet
  • Income while studying (made up of a part-time base salary and study allowance)
  • Future employment pathways in the government health sector
  • Opportunity for clinical and non clinical placements for students studying Nursing or Midwifery
  • Valuable workplace experience related to your field of study
  • Opportunity to discover an exciting and meaningful career in health
  • Grow personal and professional support networks
  • Mentoring support and career guidance
  • A culturally safe and inclusive work environment

Suitable applicants will be placed in a Recruitment Pool where appointments to the 2023 Aboriginal Cadetship Program may be made on a fixed term part time basis for 12 months, with the possibility of extension(s) for the duration of the degree/study.

Cadets will be paid at Level 2 under the appropriate Award instrument throughout their employment.

Cadets are required to complete a total of 52 days; one day per week over a 12 month period at an assigned workplace, plus attend a series of professional development days.

Who are we looking for?

Motivated university students who are interested in gaining meaningful work experience and discovering a future career in health.

We are looking for students from a range of disciplines and degrees including but not limited to; business/commerce, finance, public health, social sciences, health sciences, information technology, medicine, nursing and midwifery, human resources, legal, psychology, public relations, health promotion, social work, communications, allied health professions, education, exercise science and rehabilitation, and many other fields.

Am I eligible for a Cadetship?

To be considered for a cadetship in health you must be:

  • Enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course at a recognised university; and have completed at least one semester but require two or more semesters to complete your degree.
  • Able to commit to 52 days of work in a 12-month period from February 2023 to February 2024.
  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

How do I apply?

Applicants are required to apply online by the close of applications at 4.00pm, Wednesday, 19 October 2022.

  1. Cadet application questions - provide a brief response to each of the five application questions, in no more than 2 pages. The Cadet Application Questions form can be found as an attachment.

  3. Proof of enrolment in an undergraduate degree at a recognised university.
  4. Academic transcript.
