This is a pool recruitment process (Ref 00660). This pool will run for a period of twelve (12) months and may be used to fill ongoing fixed term contracts, secondments, acting/relieving and permanent opportunities.

As a Line Pilot (Rotary Wing) with the Western Australia Police Force (WA Police Force) you will gain a range of training and experiences that are not available with other employers. You will have the opportunity to support the Tactical Response Group (TRG), assist police patrols and winch in night operations using Night Vision Goggles; Be involved in tactical flying operations with the TRG including assaults and live fire missions; Assist the Water Police and perform Search and Rescue roles on both land and sea throughout the State; Conduct day and night patrols to assist police on the ground, detect traffic offenders and locate stolen cars; Conduct drug detection and eradication operations, and be involved in air surveillance operations and K9 transport and deployment.

WA Police Force are currently engaged in the procurement of 2 new Airbus H145 D3 helicopters and the successful applicant may be required to travel to Germany to undergo type training on appointment.

This shift work position operates on a rotational roster basis and includes night, day, afternoon, weekend and public holiday shifts.  The payment of shift penalties will apply.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

This role ensures the safe and efficient operation of all rotary wing aircraft operated by the Police Air Wing by piloting the aircraft in accordance with the Civil Aviation Act, Civil Aviation Regulations, Civil Aviation Safety Regulations, the Civil Aviation Orders and Western Australian Police Air Wing Rotary Operations Manual.

SPECIALIST PRE-REQUISITE

It is a requirement that the position holder:

  • Be an Australian Citizen prior to the completion of the selection process
  • Is successful in obtaining and maintaining a NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 1 security clearance for the duration of their appointment in the position
  • Undertake a psychological and flight assessment to determine their suitability for this position
  • Will be regularly examined for pilot and safety competence in accordance with CASA regulatory and WA Police Force Rotary Operations Manual requirements
  • Is in possession of a Commercial Pilot License (Helicopter) issued pursuant to CASR Pat 61
  • Is in possession of a Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS) rating (Civil or Australian Military)
  • Possesses a current Australian Class 1 Aviation Medical

Applicants are asked to address the following nominated work-related requirements:

Essential:

  • Holder of an Multi Engine Instrument Rating (Helicopter). Completed at least 3 Instrument Rating Proficiency Checks (IPC) or Australian Military equivalent
  • 2000 hours total helicopter experience of which 1000 hours must be Pilot in Command (PIC) and 500 hours must be as PIC of a twin-engine helicopter

Applicants are also required to submit a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV). Your CV should provide enough detail (dot points are sufficient) to allow the selection panel to assess your skills, experience and qualifications relevant to the Key Accountabilities of the attached Position Description Form.

The CV must also include the names and contact details of two (2) referees who can comment on the applicant’s ability to satisfy all of the Essential Work Related Requirements. Applicants should nominate at least one immediate (most contemporary) supervisor/manager unless exceptional circumstances exist.

Please note: For applicants deemed suitable, all Essential Work Related Requirements listed in the Position Description Form will be assessed at some stage during the selection process.

OTHER CONDITIONS

A POOL is being created to fill future vacancies that may arise within Police Air Wing. This POOL will remain active for a period of twelve (12) months from the initial appointment. Applicants who are assessed as ‘suitable’ at the completion of this process, will be placed in the POOL and may be considered for future permanent and temporary vacancies as they become available.

Once an applicant from the POOL accepts a permanent position via this selection process, that applicant will be removed from the POOL. Applicants who accept a temporary vacancy will remain in the POOL and will continue to be considered for permanent opportunities as they arise.

Where an applicant in the POOL declines an opportunity (either permanent or temporary), that applicant may forfeit their right to be considered before other suitable applicants who were identified to be less competitive.

Integrity and criminal checks will be conducted if the recommended applicant for a position is not a current WA Police Force employee. Any relocation costs associated with appointment to these positions may be the responsibility of the successful applicants.
