About the role

Banksia Hill Detention Centre is seeking dynamic and enthusiastic vocational teachers who have a passion for teaching young people at educational risk in a youth custodial setting.

Teaching in a youth custodial setting is a unique experience that provides teachers in Perth with an opportunity to work with children and young people from across Western Australia. The teaching experience is challenging and rewarding and provides teachers with opportunities to develop skills in trauma informed education. Young people in the school present with highly complex needs and challenging behaviour and many of the young people have learning disabilities and difficulties. Vocational teachers are therefore required to differentiate learning experiences to ensure all young people engage and participate in learning and training.

The role requires vocational teachers to be dynamic and flexible in their delivery of vocational education. Classrooms and workshops are multi-age and multi-ability and teachers are required to teach their trade or vocation according to the structured day. Training is provided for new teachers.

The position’s primary goal is to close the educational gap for young people in custody by providing them with the skills needed to engage in further education, training or employment in the community. Vocational teachers are required to complete lesson plans and school reports, write curriculum, manage resources, participate in validation and contribute to a collegial environment.

Current vocational courses and skill sets delivered at Banksia Hill Detention Centre include Hospitality, Horticulture, Woodwork, Art and Music, with other courses being added in 2022 such as Carpentry, Painting, Plumbing, and Hair and Beauty.
