The Western Australian Museum is looking for a Research Scientist to join the Terrestrial Zoology team.

The Western Australian Museum is positioning itself through scientific and academic excellence, public programs and relevant exhibitions to keep pace with the rapidly changing face of Western Australia. The Museum has made a major contribution to the collection, conservation and research of the State’s natural and social history, maritime heritage and the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities in Western Australia.

The Western Australian Museum is part of the Culture and Arts Portfolio, brought together by the Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA). DCA is the State Government agency responsible for the Government’s support of management and development of arts and culture in Western Australia.

Conditions

This is a full time, fixed term vacancy, for a period of 11 months and 3 weeks, with a possibility of extension.

A current (within 6 months) National Police Clearance Certificate will be required prior to commencement of employment, as per the Department of Culture and the Arts Police Record Screening Policy.

Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, applicants for this position may be considered for ‘similar’ vacancies within the Culture and Arts Portfolio and/or the wider public sector which arise within a reasonable period of time. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position, then the next most suitable applicant may also be selected from this process. Future vacancies may be considered - fixed term, part time and full time.

Location

This position is located at the Museum’s head office at 49 Kew Street, Welshpool.

Job Description

The purpose of this position is to undertake taxonomic research into Pilbara subterranean and short-range endemic fauna. You will be required to identify specimens, write reports and maintain collections as well as to update the Museum’s website to enhance data regarding Pilbara fauna. Other duties include collaborating with other Museum staff to publish the results of research journals and working as part of a team to provide advice to other Western Australian government departments regarding the outcomes of the project.
