About the role

The position of Team Leader at East Kimberley Regional Youth Justice Services is responsible for the supervision of staff and the operational day to day running of the centre. The Team Leader will work with case managers to ensure positive outcomes are achieved in the work with young people, family and Communities. The Team Leader works closely with the centre manager in the day to day running of the centre.

The team at East Kimberley Regional Youth Justice services the towns of Kununurra, Wyndham, Halls Creek, and remote communities including Warmun, Balgo and Kalumburu. The region takes in some of the most picturesque places in outback Australia. As a Team Leader, you are responsible for exhibiting positive and strong leadership to the whole team. It involves travel to very isolated communities, it involves communication to families, strong people and elders to provide support for our young people.

Our work involves using research led counselling and intervention techniques to affect positive behaviour changes in young people. The position is based in Kununurra, and you will work in a close-knit team with all members of the team focused on working with young people and their families to achieve positive results. There is travel requirements that come with the position.

Some of the responsibilities of the role include:

  • Applying the principles of the Young Offenders Act in the work we do with young people in the justice system.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Centre and case coordination of young people on community-based orders
  • Ensuring the submission of timely court reports
  • Coaching, training, and mentoring of team members
  • Develops options and applies strategic thinking across all areas of work
  • Builds, manages, cultivates and maintain relationships in a culturally competent manner across the board, with staff within the team, the young people, their families, and communities.
  • Management of human resources, financial, physical and technological resources to ensure efficient and effective service delivery outcomes for the management of young people in the Department’s care.

Special conditions

  • In accordance with the National Child Safety Principles, people who work directly with children and young people, you must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position.
  • When working in a regional area there is a requirement for every YJS Team Leader to be away from home for periods of time. You must be available for out of hours duties as per the Award.
  • Travel may be required to be undertaken so there is a requirement for every YJS Team Leader to drive vehicles (including 4WD) with manual transmissions and as such, a current manual driver’s license (class C) must be held when working across the State. There is also a requirement to travel via airplane including light aircraft.

Permanent, fixed term, full time and part time appointments may be offered in the Kimberley Region during this period.
