The School

Newman Senior High School (SHS) is located at the heart of a vibrant, multicultural and highly connected Pilbara community. Newman offers the benefits of regional living within a welcoming community that is strongly supported by local organisations, industry and community groups. There is always something to be part of, with a wide range of community events, sporting opportunities and social activities throughout the year. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Pilbara offers exceptional opportunities for camping, four-wheel driving and exploring the region, while those who prefer quieter pursuits will also find active arts, crafts and community groups. It is a place where people can quickly build connections, become involved and feel part of the community.

At Newman SHS, you will join a committed team that is already achieving positive outcomes for students. Our priority is to sustain this success and continue to improve student achievement, engagement and pathways. The school is well resourced and has strong foundations, including the NEWMANWAY for Quality Teaching, an established pastoral care approach and a strategic focus on Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) that connects classroom learning with the opportunities, industries and future pathways available within the Pilbara. These are underpinned by our values of Care and Compassion, Respect and Responsibility, which shape both our teaching and the way we work with students. Established partnerships with families, local industry and community organisations provide valuable opportunities that extend student learning and pathways beyond the classroom.

Newman SHS is entering an exciting phase of growth, with expanding programs and leadership capacity across the school. As we grow, our focus is on strengthening consistency, further embedding key initiatives and ensuring our structures and systems support staff and students to thrive.

The Role

The Rise Up Program, established in 2022, forms a part of the BHP Pilbara Education Partnership. It is a whole-school initiative designed to support all students at Newman SHS in achieving personal growth and success. Designed to add value to school core business and based on a framework of tiers of opportunity, the program encourages students to “rise up” in key areas such as attendance, academic achievement, leadership and community engagement.

A key focus of the Rise Up Teacher role is working closely with the PBS team and classroom teachers to embed consistent Tier 1 Positive Behaviour in Schools (PBS) practices across the school through the Rise Up Program. This work will strengthen student engagement and build a sense of belonging. The role is also central to individual pathway planning. You would work directly with students to identify their interests and aspirations, set personalised goals and develop plans to achieve them. You would lead whole-school assemblies, promote student voice through the Student Leadership Team and support students to develop their leadership skills.

You would work with school staff and community groups to create real-world learning opportunities aligned with students’ interests and future pathways. These may include volunteering, community projects and SCSA Endorsed Programs such as Community Service. You will ideally guide students to reflect on these experiences and build evidence of their personal growth, skill development and readiness for further education or employment.

The successful applicant will ideally be responsible for meeting the BHP Pilbara Education Partnership contract deliverables, including quarterly, biannual and annual reporting, and monitoring the Rise Up budget.

Experience implementing whole-school programs, particularly PBS, would be an advantage. Holding a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, or being willing to attain one, would also be highly regarded.
