The Role
North Harrisdale Primary School (PS) is ideally seeking a skilled and confident Auslan teacher to lead our Auslan program
Our school is home to several deaf and hard of hearing students supported by an established interpreting team. Our Year 3 to 6 students learn Auslan for authentic reasons: to converse with their peers, to understand Deaf culture and community, and to be part of a school where inclusion is practised and celebrated. You would plan, teach and assess a sequential Auslan program across Year 3 to Year 6, aligned to the Western Australian Curriculum: Languages - Auslan. You would work alongside our teachers to build Auslan capability across the school and contribute to our community that values collaboration and collective responsibility.
The successful applicant would become part of our specialist team and ideally show the professional knowledge, practices and experience to deliver an engaging and relevant primary school Auslan curriculum. As part of this role, you will ideally have knowledge and understanding of deaf awareness, self-reflect and assess the effectiveness of their teaching practice, promote an environment of active and positive learning, and provide educational opportunities and activities which enable students to develop a passion for learning Auslan in an engaging and supportive environment.
We are looking for a teacher who can ideally display the following skills:
- Competent Auslan signer with experience teaching the language to beginning learners, preferably in a primary school setting
- Holds strong knowledge of the Western Australian Curriculum: Languages - Auslan, and can translate it into an engaging, sequential teaching and learning program
- Plans, teaches and assesses against curriculum outcomes, with demonstrated strength in assessment, moderation and using data to inform planning and reporting
- Understands Deaf culture and deaf awareness, and can build this into everyday teaching
- Brings a strong repertoire of classroom management strategies and high expectations of every student
- Collaborates readily, and reflects on their own practice
- Has excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective working relationships with students, staff and the wider school community.
