Are you an enthusiastic, resilient, flexible and adventurous educator looking for an exciting opportunity to work in a range of schools across rural, remote and regional Western Australia?

As a Teacher Flying Squad member, you will travel to schools across Western Australia to provide short-term teaching support where it is needed most. Each appointment offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in students' learning while building your own skills in a range of schools, communities, and educational settings.

We are seeking early childhood, primary, and secondary teachers across a range of learning areas, including Mathematics, Science, English, Humanities, and Technologies to join our Category 1 Teacher Flying Squad Appointment Pool.

How does this Teacher Flying Squad pool work?

Successful applicants will be employed full-time on a 24-month fixed-term contract and undertake short-term teaching appointments as directed in regional, rural, and remote schools across Western Australia. 

Appointments are generally between 5 and 10 weeks, with teachers often deployed at short notice to support schools experiencing urgent staffing needs. You may be required to travel at short notice and, on occasion, teach outside your primary area of qualification for short periods.

Flying Squad teachers will receive travel and accommodation for all appointments. Due to the nature of short-term accommodation, pets are generally unable to accompany teachers on appointments.

Employment benefits

As a category 1 Flying Squad Teacher, you will receive:

• A teacher salary in accordance with the applicable award.
• A $16,500 annual allowance, paid fortnightly.
• Free accommodation during appointments.
• Travel to and from appointments.
• Reimbursement of eligible expenses in accordance with the Award.
• Following completion of the 24 month contract and probation period, you will be appointed as a permanent teacher with the Department.

• Willing and able to travel and live in diverse regional, rural, and remote communities on short notice.

To be eligible, applicants must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, Western Australia for the duration of the two-year contract.

Current permanent teachers must obtain approval from their line manager before applying. If appointed, they will be released from their substantive position for the two-year contract period and will return to their permanent position upon completion of the program.

How to Apply

The recruitment process consists of two stages.

Stage 1: Application Assessment

Complete the online application and attach:

• A comprehensive CV (maximum 4 pages).
• A cover letter (maximum 2 pages) demonstrating your capability against the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (AITSL):

• Professional Knowledge – Know your students and how they learn.
• Professional Practice – Know the content and how to teach it.
• Professional Engagement – Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers, and the community.

• Contact details for two work-related referees, including your current or most recent line manager.

If successful applicants will progress to Stage 2.

Stage 2: Interview

Shortlisted applicants will be notified to attend an online interview via Microsoft Teams.

Supporting Documents

If you are not a current permanent or fixed-term teacher with the Department, you must also provide:

Proof of identity

• Birth certificate, or
• Passport
• Change of name documentation (if applicable)

Please note: Driver's licences are not accepted.

Eligibility to work (if you are not an Australian citizen or permanent resident)

• Australian or New Zealand citizenship documentation, or
• Valid Australian work visa and VEVO evidence
