About the role

We are seeking a motivated Chemist with knowledge of organic analytical chemistry and an interest in toxicology examinations. As part of the Analytical Toxicology team, you will undertake forensic analysis for the Coronial and WA Police Toxicology teams and other toxicology programs, supporting coronial, traffic and criminal investigations. You will prepare reports under supervision and contribute to technical projects, method development and laboratory operations.

To be successful in this role, you will possess a degree or higher qualification in Chemistry, or a relevant science with substantial chemistry components. You will have the ability to produce high-quality work in a busy laboratory environment, communicate effectively and work cohesively as part of a team.

The nature of work within the Forensic Science Laboratory varies and may involve exposure to sensitive and confronting material. Staff are supported with a specialist health and wellbeing program. Resilience, tact and a willingness to engage with available support services are important attributes for this role.

This is a temporary full time vacancy of 12 months for backfilling, with the possibility of extension and / or permanency. Applicants assessed as suitable but not recommended for this vacancy may be considered for similar positions for up to 12 months after the selection process is finalised.

For a fixed term appointment, you must have valid Australian working rights for the full contract period. ChemCentre is not able to provide employer visa sponsorship arrangements for this vacancy.

Prior to commencing employment, a National Police Clearance, WA Police Force Integrity Check, fitness for work assessment via alcohol and drug testing, and proof of identity will be required.

• Ability to demonstrate scientific knowledge relevant to organic analytical chemistry (SC2)
• Practical experience and / or an understanding of modern, analytical organic chemistry instrumental and separation techniques relevant to toxicology examinations: in particular, gas chromatography; liquid chromatography; low- and high-resolution mass spectrometry; immunoassay; and extraction techniques such as liquid-liquid, solid phase and/or supported liquid extractions. (SC3)
• Ability to contribute to technical projects and/or laboratory operations (SC5)
