This is a permanent, full-time vacancy.
About the role
The Principal Registrar performs judicial and quasi-judicial functions, including exercising the powers and duties of a Registrar under the District Court Act 1969 (WA), the Rules of the Court, other relevant legislation and delegations from the Chief Judge, while leading and supporting the Court’s team of Registrars.
The role involves determining a broad range of interlocutory, case management and ancillary matters; contributing to the effective management of complex civil, criminal and appellate work; providing high-level legal and operational advice; leading a team of Registrars; and driving continuous improvement in court practice and procedure.
This position will suit an experienced lawyer with superior court experience, strong judgement and proven leadership capability.
Suitability Requirements
Through the recruitment process, we will be looking for a candidate who can demonstrate skills, experience and attributes in relation to the following:
- Leadership and capability building – able to lead, direct, mentor and support Registrars, allocate work effectively, and maintain and monitor the progression and finalisation of the Court’s caseload.
- Collaboration, reform and operational improvement – able to work constructively with the judiciary, court staff and stakeholders to improve court practice, procedure and service delivery, including through sound legal and practical advice.
- Professional standing, integrity, and influence – demonstrates personal integrity, sound judgement and respectful professional relationships, with the ability to communicate clearly, model respect, build trust and influence positive change.
- Superior Court practice and case management – extensive knowledge of superior court practice and procedure, with the ability to manage complex civil, criminal and appellate matters, determine interlocutory and ancillary applications, conduct mediations and other hearings, settle orders and deliver judgements.
Eligibility
Qualifications
- Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia or qualified so as to be eligible for admission in Western Australia.
- Minimum 5 years post admission experience.
