The Role
The Department is seeking an experienced and proactive Manager Strategic Work Health and Safety to support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of strategic Work Health and Safety (WHS) initiatives across the Department.  This is an exciting management opportunity for a high-performing, WHS professional who is passionate about creating safe, healthy and inclusive workplaces. Working closely with the Assistant Director, Strategic Work Health & Safety, you will play a key role in driving organisational safety performance, influencing strategic direction, and ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.

We are looking for leaders who can think beyond their own function, navigate complexity with sound judgement and focus on the work that will make the greatest organisational difference. You will build capability in others, use evidence and emerging insights to inform decisions, and lead with fairness, integrity and a strong commitment to public purpose.

To be successful in this role, you will bring your expertise and leadership in managing complex WHS matters including workers compensation, injury management and return to work matters. The position will require occasional travel to Muresk Institute, the Department’s specialised agricultural training facility located near Northam.

In the next 12 months the occupant will work on exciting initiatives that enhance workplace health and safety outcomes, and span across various strategic projects such as WHS Management System (WHSMS) Framework; Psychosocial Safety Strategy, Proactive Ergonomic and Good Work Design; Contractor Safety Management; WHS Risk Management Framework; WHS Training Needs Analysis; etc.

Suitability requirements for this position: 

  • Eligibility – Demonstrated applied knowledge and experience leading and managing a team in WHS, Workers Compensation and Injury Management; Completion of or progression towards a relevant tertiary qualification

  • Visa validity - To be appointed to a position at the Department, you need to be able to provide evidence of your right to work in Australia. Permanent appointments will require Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency or New Zealand Citizenship with unrestricted work rights. Fixed term appointments will require a valid working visa.
