The Opportunity:
This is a fixed term opportunity from 30 November 2026 to 30 June 2028 with the possibility of extension and permanency.
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Environmental Officer to join the Iron Ore Assessments team. Working alongside experienced environmental practitioners, you will contribute to the assessment of development proposals under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, helping ensure environmental risks and impacts are thoroughly considered in decision-making processes.
In this role, you will undertake research, analysis and environmental assessment activities, prepare technical advice and reports, and engage with industry, government agencies and the community on environmental matters. You will support the evaluation of environmental information, identify potential risks and impacts, and contribute to evidence-based recommendations that inform the work of the Environmental Protection Authority. You will also assist with policy and project initiatives that strengthen environmental assessment and regulatory outcomes across Western Australia.
We are seeking a candidate with a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant discipline, or an approved equivalent qualification, together with an interest in environmental assessment and regulation. You will have sound analytical, communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to interpret legislation and policy with guidance, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work within agreed timeframes. Most importantly, you will be a collaborative team member who enjoys learning, building relationships and contributing to positive environmental outcomes.
At the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, we are committed to fostering a modern workplace that supports flexibility, collaboration, and wellbeing.
Our flexible work arrangements include options for alternative work locations and adaptable schedules, designed to accommodate a variety of professional and personal needs.
We recognise that effective work can happen in different settings, and our approach reflects this, enabling staff to contribute meaningfully while maintaining balance and resilience.
We are committed to creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels supported and valued. We recognise the unique skills, perspectives and experiences that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, women and young people bring to our workforce, and we encourage applications from these groups.
We welcome applications from people with disabilities and are committed to providing reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process. If you require any adjustments to participate in the recruitment process, please let us know and we will work with you to meet your needs.
