Job Description

The Environment Officer plays a key role in the development, reviewing and reporting of the Rottnest Islands Conservation Management Strategies and the implementation of the associated research, monitoring and operational programs. The environment officer is responsible for:

  • Development and implementation of conservation programs, which may include the Terrestrial Conservation Action Plan, Marine Conservation Action Plan, Weed management, and five-year revegetation plan

  • Providing advice and support to the Manager (Conservation) and other specialist services covering conservation, protection and restoration of the reserves marine and terrestrial environment to meet statutory and strategic goals

  • Coordinating fauna response and management

  • Management of Operations Officers, work planning and activities

The Environment Officers are expected to regularly be on-island for 4 days per week.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should address the following essential criteria. These should be addressed in no more than three (3) pages in total. Desirable criteria will be assessed as required.

  1. Considerable understanding of, and experience in, the preparation and delivery of operational conservation management programs with a focus on wildlife management.

  2. Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills and ability to liaise effectively with diverse stakeholders.

  3. Proven ability to manage small projects including scoping, budget, and reporting, to deliver planned outputs within budget and timeframe.

  4. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams including supervising and supporting team members to achieve results.

  5. Applies and promotes the principles of equity, diversity and work health and safety in the workplace.

Desirable Criteria

  1. A tertiary qualification in Environment management, Sustainability or equivalent.

  2. Strong data management skills and ability to interpret relevant data and apply regulations and legislation.

  3. Ability to follow directions to undertake research, develop and implement programs relating to wildlife management.

  4. Knowledge and experience in GIS and data management software.
