Mount Pleasant Primary School (PS) is an Independent Public School catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in Perth’s southern suburbs. We believe every student is capable of successful learning and are committed to providing an inclusive, caring and challenging environment where children can achieve their potential.

Our motto, “Working Together”, reflects the importance we place on collaboration and positive relationships between students, staff, families and the wider community. Guided by our values of Respect, Responsibility, Gratitude and Kindness, we support students to become socially aware, resilient critical thinkers with the skills for lifelong learning and long-term happiness.

Students access a broad and balanced curriculum, complemented by specialist programs in Physical Education, French, Science, Art and Music. An active P&C Association and supportive School Board contribute to a strong sense of community and shared commitment to student learning and wellbeing.

Mount Pleasant PS is currently participating in the Centre for Excellence program, with a school improvement focus on implementing explicit instruction in literacy. Through professional learning, collaboration and reflection, we are strengthening shared approaches for high impact teaching and assessment to improve outcomes for all students.

Our staff work collaboratively and value professional dialogue, mutual support and a commitment to continually strengthening teaching practice.

The Role

We are seeking a reflective, collaborative and enthusiastic Primary teacher who places student learning and wellbeing at the centre of their practice for a year 3 - 6 role. The successful applicant should hold high expectations for every student and create a classroom environment where students feel safe, valued and motivated to learn.

You should display a strong understanding of evidence-based teaching and a willingness to contribute to our implementation of explicit instruction. Knowledge of the science of reading and the principles of how students learn, including the role of cognitive load, practice and review, will be highly regarded.

Desirable skills and experience include:

  • Delivering systematic, explicit literacy instruction, including phonemic awareness and phonics where appropriate, alongside fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing.
  • Planning well-sequenced lessons with clear learning intentions, teacher modelling, guided practice and supported opportunities for independent application.
  • Using frequent checks for understanding, effective feedback and daily review to respond to misconceptions and consolidate learning.
  • Using diagnostic, formative and summative assessment to identify learning needs, monitor progress and adjust teaching.
  • Providing targeted intervention and extension so that students with differing literacy needs are supported and challenged.
  • Contributing to consistent whole-school approaches through collaborative planning, assessment moderation and the sharing of effective practice.

Experience implementing evidence-based literacy approaches would be an advantage, as would the capacity to translate professional learning into classroom practice. We also value applicants who are willing to learn, reflect and contribute positively to our school improvement work.

The successful applicant should deliver effective literacy and numeracy programs aligned with whole-school approaches and differentiate teaching for students with diverse abilities, backgrounds and learning needs. You should combine clear instruction with purposeful opportunities for students to apply their learning, think critically and work collaboratively.

Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to teamwork are highly valued. You should contribute actively to professional learning and be open to feedback, classroom observation and instructional coaching to strengthen your practice and evaluate your impact on student learning. The successful applicant should establish positive relationships with students and families, communicate clearly and respectfully, and use consistent, proactive approaches to support student engagement and behaviour. A capacity to integrate digital technologies purposefully to enhance learning would also be an advantage.

We welcome applicants who bring evidence-based instructional practice, initiative, flexibility and a positive approach to their work, and who are committed to contributing to a collegial school culture focused on continuous improvement and success for every student.
