Some students may have experienced trauma, interrupted or limited prior schooling, displacement, family separation or significant cultural and educational transitions. The Role

Lynwood SHS Intensive English Centre (IEC) is seeking passionate, motivated and committed Teachers – English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) to join our dedicated IEC team as we expand our program in 2027. Specifically, we are seeking applicants with expertise in delivering EAL/D English programs, as well as applicants with specialist knowledge in Maths and/or Science who can support students to develop English language proficiency through curriculum learning.

Suitable applicants will ideally be enthusiastic and committed to improving outcomes for newly arrived students from migrant and refugee backgrounds. They should understand the educational, linguistic, cultural and social and emotional needs of students with little English proficiency, including those whose prior schooling has been limited or interrupted. Relevant EAL/D or TESOL qualifications and experience in an Intensive English Centre, a mainstream secondary EAL/D setting or WACE courses will be viewed favourably.

Working within the IEC, they will ideally plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate programs aligned with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority curriculum. They ideally will explicitly teach Standard Australian English using effective language acquisition strategies across learning areas, with differentiation and scaffolding that give students both strong support and meaningful challenge. They should bring high expectations, cultural responsiveness and an inclusive, trauma-informed approach to their teaching.

Suitable applicants should use purposeful assessment, including the EAL/D Progress Map, to plan learning, monitor progress and adjust their teaching. They will ideally take a strategic, evidence-based and goal-focused approach, reflect on their practice, and establish safe, engaging classrooms through effective management, respectful relationships and practices that support student wellbeing and participation.

They should bring strong interpersonal skills and sound professional judgement to their work with students, colleagues, families and community members. Able to work independently and collaboratively, they contribute to coordinated support across the IEC and broader school, and build positive partnerships that strengthen students’ engagement, achievement and transition into Western Australian schooling.
