The School
Access to Government housing is limited on Cocos Island; Suitable applicants may be placed in shared accommodation.
Cocos Islands District High School (DHS) is located on the scenic Cocos (Keeling) Islands, about 2,900 kilometres northwest of Perth in the Indian Ocean. The school offers education from Kindergarten to Year 10 across two campuses on West Island and Home Island and serves a distinctive, culturally diverse community, with many students from the local Cocos Malay population. Suitable teachers would be expected to be flexible, working across campuses and diverse classroom settings
Our whole-school instructional model ensures smooth transitions across educational stages. Driven by our motto, ‘Kerjasama & Kejayaan’ (Cooperation & Achievement), we foster strong partnerships among students, teachers, and the community, which are central to our school culture.
Our primary classes include Multi-Age Group (MAG) classes for multiple year groups, mainly serving Anglo-Australian students (West Island), and split or single-stream classes with primarily English as Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students (Cocos-Malay, Home Island). Many classes support students with special needs, language difficulties, or learning challenges. The school is well-equipped, maintaining small classes and providing extra support. We embrace diversity and prioritise equity for all students.
Respectful cross-cultural engagement on the Cocos Islands is important for joining the teaching team. Teachers at Cocos Islands DHS should ideally be resilient, resourceful, and prepared to work in one of the state's most remote locations.

The Role
Suitable applicants will ideally possess proficiency in current and effective teaching practices that support the school’s strategic goals and directions. They should ideally have a strong capacity to plan challenging and engaging programs, utilising a thorough understanding of the Western Australian Curriculum. Knowledge of Explicit Instruction, High-Impact Teaching Strategies, and Synthetic Phonics programs such as Sounds-Write or MultiLit, as well as the Talk for Writing program, will be highly desirable.
Suitable applicants should ideally have a good understanding of teaching students from EAL/D background and be familiar with the EAL/D progress maps. We are seeking applicants who ideally display data-informed practices, enabling them to differentiate instruction effectively and achieve high levels of achievement and progress for all students.
Teachers in our Early Childhood Education (ECE) phase of learning should ideally promote the principles outlined in the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Standards. They would recognise that students need opportunities to interact and build trusting relationships. Programs should ideally include planned, purposeful play, balanced with explicit teaching of essential foundational skills and concepts. Additionally, experience delivering the Australian Abecedarian Approach (3A), including its conversational reading, enriched caregiving and language-priority strategies to support children's cognitive, language and social-emotional development, is highly desirable.
As a member of the Cocos Islands DHS staff, suitable applicants would develop positive relationships that enhance the school's overall well-being and drive positive student outcomes, regardless of your personal preferences. Creativity and resourcefulness are key for success, both professionally and personally, on the islands. This includes actively engaging in a coaching culture centred on observation and feedback, which is vital for professional growth and student achievement.
