About the role

The Research and Appeals Officer is responsible for managing and preparing correspondence on behalf of the Director Sentence Management, including Ombudsman enquiries, complaints and briefing notes for the Minister and Executive, and queries from prisoners. Responsibilities also include undertaking research relating to various correspondence forwarded for appropriate action; liaising with a wide variety of stakeholders to resolve matters; research and preparation of documentation for appeals lodged for prisoner applications for Home Leave, Prisoner Employment Program and Child Visits for Restricted Prisoners; providing support to the Managers within Sentence Management, and; preparing requests for legal opinions relating to Sentence Management.

Communicates and Influences Effectively

A demonstrated ability to; present messages confidently and persuasively and to actively listen, understand and adapt communication styles to suit a range of audiences, listen to differing views and opinions and develop persuasive counter arguments are requirements for this role.

Role Specific Criteria

Knowledge of Prisons Act 1981 and Prison Regulations 1982, Sentence Administration Act 2003, Sentence Administration Regulations 2003 and Sentencing Act 1995 and other relevant legislation as well as Departmental policies and procedures will enhance performance in the role.

Tertiary qualifications in a related field are highly desirable.
