Are you a final-year teaching student looking to build classroom experience while completing your studies?

The Department of Education is seeking applications from final-year pre-service teachers enrolled in an accredited early childhood, primary or secondary initial teacher education qualification (Bachelor of Education or Master of Teaching) in 2026.

The Pre-Service Teacher Employment Register allows Western Australian public schools to consider eligible pre-service teachers for part-time teaching opportunities of up to 0.8 FTE across metropolitan, regional and remote schools.

Appointments may vary in duration depending on the needs of the school. Acceptance to the Employment Register does not guarantee employment.

Work with us

Working as a Pre-Service Teacher provides valuable classroom experience while completing your studies and offers an opportunity to build confidence, develop practical teaching skills and strengthen your understanding of public education settings.

As an employee of the Department, you may also have access to:

  • attractive allowances in many country locations
  • 12% employer contributed superannuation
  • vacation leave (school holidays) and other leave entitlements, including sick and carers’ leave
  • subsidised accommodation where applicable.

Pre-Service Teachers appointed from the Employment Register may also:

  • participate in induction and support programs developed for new and returning teachers
  • access relevant professional learning opportunities available to Graduate Teachers
  • access paid study leave where professional experience placements occur during their appointment.

Please note, employment from this register can't be used as recognition of prior learning or credits toward university studies. This includes Teacher Professional Assessment or Professional Experience units.

Who can apply?

To be eligible, you must:

  • be enrolled in the final year of an accredited initial teacher education qualification (Bachelor of Education or Master of Teaching) at an Australian university in 2026
  • provide academic transcripts confirming your course progression and successful completion of at least one professional experience placement
  • provide evidence that you have achieved the required standard for both literacy and numeracy components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE).

If you are not in the final year of your course in 2026, you will not be eligible for consideration.

You may also apply for the Graduate Teacher Advertisement during your final year of study to be considered for opportunities as a qualified teacher following graduation.

How the Employment Register works

If your eligibility is confirmed, you will be accepted to the Pre-Service Teacher Employment Register and notified accordingly.

Schools you have nominated may then consider you for suitable part-time teaching opportunities that align with your current studies, preferences and availability.

If you accept an employment offer, the school will work with you to apply for Limited Registration through the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA) if you don’t already have it.

You should only nominate schools where you would genuinely accept employment.
