About The Role

The Public Transport Authority is seeking Mechanical and Electrical Technicians to join our Rollingstock Maintenance team at Kewdale Depot. All electricians with a current WA ‘A’ Grade Electrical Licence or people with a mechanical discipline will be considered.

These are exciting opportunities for skilled trades professionals who are passionate about safety, reliability and technical excellence. Working on the iconic Prospector and Australind rail fleets, you will play a critical role in ensuring our rollingstock remains safe, reliable and available to deliver services to communities across Western Australia.

Whether your expertise lies in mechanical systems or electrical and control systems, you will be responsible for fault finding, maintenance, repair and continuous improvement of safety-critical train components and equipment. Working within a highly skilled team, you will utilise your technical knowledge to diagnose and rectify faults, support operational performance and contribute to maintaining the highest standards of rail safety and customer service.

As part of a shift-based maintenance environment, you will have the opportunity to work across a wide range of rollingstock systems including traction and driveline components, braking systems, communications equipment, control systems, HVAC, passenger amenities, safety systems and emerging technologies. These roles offer a unique opportunity to apply your trade skills in a specialised rail environment while contributing to the safe and reliable operation of Western Australia's regional passenger rail network.

You will be required to work a 4-week rotating roster, including one week of night shifts. With applicable shift allowances and rostered overtime, you can expect to earn approximately $120,000 per annum plus 12% superannuation while completing the required training and competency assessments.

Upon successful completion of all PTA training, competencies and role requirements, your earnings may increase to approximately $145,000 per annum plus 12% superannuation, inclusive of applicable allowances and overtime.

Mechanical Rollingstock Technician (Mechanical rates Wages, $1,814.60 - $1,1831.60 per week plus 12% superannuation)

As a Mechanical Rollingstock Technician, you will undertake maintenance, inspections, servicing and fault rectification across mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and associated ELV electrical systems. Your expertise will support the ongoing performance and reliability of the PTA's regional passenger fleets, ensuring customers receive a safe and dependable service.

Electrical Rollingstock Technician (Electrical rates Wages, $1,852.90 - $1,869.90 per week plus 12% superannuation)

As an Electrical Rollingstock Technician, you will specialise in the maintenance, diagnosis and repair of rollingstock electrical, electronic and control systems. Working on a range of AC and DC systems, you will play a key role in ensuring critical train control, communication, safety and passenger systems continue to operate effectively and reliably.

About You

For the Mechanical Rollingstock Technician role, you will have trade qualifications and experience in mechanical or plant maintenance environments, with exposure to the maintenance, repair and inspection of safety-critical components such as braking systems, diesel engines, transmissions, couplers, suspension systems, HVAC equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Experience working with rollingstock or similar mobile or fixed plant and heavy industrial equipment will be highly regarded.

For the Electrical Rollingstock Technician role, you will hold a current WA ‘A’ Grade Electrical Licence and possess experience in the maintenance, fault finding, repair and overhaul of electrical systems and safety-critical equipment. Experience working with AC/DC systems, control circuits, electrical schematics, HVAC systems, communications equipment, train protection systems and other rollingstock-related technologies will be highly regarded.

For both roles, you will demonstrate:

• Experience undertaking maintenance, inspections, fault diagnosis and repairs on complex mechanical and/or electrical systems.
• The ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, maintenance instructions and diagnostic information.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose faults and determine effective solutions.
• Sound written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• A proactive approach to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
• The ability to organise and prioritise work, exercise initiative and work independently when required.
• The confidence to make informed, safety-critical decisions relating to the condition and operation of rollingstock assets.

Previous experience in rail, rollingstock, heavy vehicle, mining, defence, manufacturing, power generation or other safety-critical maintenance environments will be highly regarded.

There are three Mechanical and five Electrical Rollingstock Technician permanent positions available for immediate start. Applicants assessed as suitable through this process may be used to fill similar vacancies on a fixed term or permanent basis that may arise within the next 12 months.
