About our Team
The Knowledge, Information and Technology Directorate is accountable for the provision of services and technology that support strategic and operational services across the Department of Justice, enable information to be leveraged efficiently and ensure the Department’s investment in technology is optimised.
Within the Directorate, the dynamic Information Release and Litigation Management Branch plays a key role in coordinating responses to the Department's civil litigation matters, in consultation with external legal service providers and the Department's insurer. This includes public liability claims, class actions, judicial review applications, coronial inquests, youth custodial complaints and other court-related proceedings.
The Branch also oversees the delivery of a range of central information release functions under relevant legislation and other authorised mechanisms including the:
- National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse Act 2018.
- Freedom of Information Act 1992.
- Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024.
About the role
Reporting to the Assistant Director Litigation Management, the Manager Litigation Management is responsible for leading, motivating and shaping the strategic management of the Department's response to civil litigation and redress matters, while building productive relationships and collaborating closely with the State Solicitor's Office, law firms, the Insurance Commission of Western Australia and other government departments.
In this hands-on leadership role, you will:
- Build team capability, align resources with business priorities, and foster a culture of customer service excellence, accountability, high performance and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to the provision of advice, executive and ministerial reporting, while supporting the development, implementation and review of strategies, policies, standards and procedures that promote effective governance, legal and operational compliance across litigation and case management activities.
Please note this role may involve reviewing records and materials that are sensitive and confronting in nature as part of the management of litigation and redress matters.
Suitability Requirements
Through the recruitment process, we will be looking for a candidate who can demonstrate skills, experience and attributes in relation to the following:
- Shapes and Manages Strategy – Experience leading complex operational functions and delivering civil claims and litigation management services in a highly regulated environment. Ability to provide strategic direction, drive operational excellence and align activities with organisational and government priorities.
- Knowledge and Experience in Civil Claims, Litigation and Related Case Management – Sound knowledge and practical experience in civil claims, litigation and related case management processes, including the management of complex and sensitive matters within a legislative, policy and governance framework.
- Communicates Effectively and Builds Productive Relationships – Highly developed communication and influencing skills, with the ability to provide strategic advice, present complex information clearly to diverse audiences, and prepare high-quality briefings and correspondence. Proven ability to engage stakeholders in a timely and effective manner and build, maintain and influence productive relationships with senior stakeholders, government agencies and external partners to achieve shared outcomes.
- Achieve Results – Proven ability to deliver quality outcomes in complex and dynamic environments through effective planning, prioritisation, resource management and performance monitoring. Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement while building team capability and maintaining a strong focus on stakeholder feedback. Values specialist expertise, draws on the knowledge and skills of others, and contributes own expertise to achieve organisational objectives.
- Navigates Complexity and Leads Change – Demonstrates sound judgement and critical thinking in complex and ambiguous environments, assessing risks, impacts and options to make informed decisions and deliver outcomes. Remains adaptable through change and uncertainty, responds proactively to emerging issues, and supports others through change by sharing information, building understanding and modelling expected leadership behaviours.
Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment to permanent positions in the West Australian Public Sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
