The Role

As an Education Assistant – Special Needs, you will play an important role in creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for students with a diverse range of disabilities. Through strong communication and positive relationships, you will work collaboratively with teachers, families, external agencies and other members of the school team to support student learning, wellbeing and engagement.

Suitable applicants should be caring, organised, flexible and committed to understanding each student as an individual. You will ideally use positive and proactive strategies to develop students’ academic, self-regulation, social and emotional skills, while building their confidence and independence. A willingness to reflect on your practice, learn from others and engage in professional learning will be highly regarded in continually strengthening your skills and knowledge.

In this role, you may contribute to the implementation of individualised and specialised programs, monitor student progress and share relevant feedback with teachers, families and caregivers. You will ideally work alongside students to recognise their strengths, celebrate their achievements and help them develop the skills they need to participate successfully and increasingly independently in their learning.

  • Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
