The Role

As a Special Needs Education Assistant, you will work under teacher direction to support the implementation of specialised and planned education programs, with a focus on improving student engagement, learning, wellbeing and independence. You will use your skills, knowledge and experience to provide responsive support that enables students with diverse needs to successfully access and participate in their learning.

Suitable applicants will ideally have experience supporting students with a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, developmental and learning needs, anxiety, trauma and social-emotional and behavioural regulation needs. Experience implementing individualised supports and using effective strategies to develop students’ communication, socialisation, self-regulation and independence is highly desirable.

  1. Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  2. Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  3. Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
