About the role

The Maintenance Instructor will undertake all routine and emergency maintenance of the prisons buildings, facilities equipment and general grounds work, and are responsible for the provision of productive work for prisoners in all facets of the maintenance industry at the prison. The instructor will also be required to provide the necessary training to prisoners assisting with prison maintenance.

Suitability Requirements

Through the recruitment process, we will be looking for a candidate who can demonstrate skills, experience and attributes in relation to the following:

Organisation and Resource Management – Manage the day to day operations of the workshop including preparing, planning and scheduling daily work activities for prisoners. Overall responsibility for the supervision, coordination, instruction and control of prisoners in all activities or duties they undertake within the industry or service area on a day to day basis.

Instruction and Training - Provide instruction and accredited training to prisoners participating in and achieving qualifications, ensuring consistent approved assessment requirements are met, in the relevant industry or service area. Undertake prisoner induction training on principles, practices, procedures and use of equipment within the industry or service areas.

Interpersonal Skills - The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders utilising written and oral skills.  The ability to question, listen, understand, and discuss calmly while adapting to audiences particularly those relevant to minority groups, non-English speaking backgrounds and indigenous people.

Integrity A demonstrated commitment to adhere to the Code of Conduct, behave honestly and ethically.  Stays calm and professional under pressure, and provide accurate information to others. Provides accurate information, checks and confirms accuracy prior to release.  

The suitability requirements outlined will be what the panel will assess throughout the selection process.

Eligibility

Qualifications

  • Possess a current valid manual class “C” motor vehicle driving licence.
  • Trade qualification Certificate III in Maintenance or a relevant Trade
  • Possess a current valid Provide First Aid (HLTAID003) accreditation (or equivalent eg Senior First Aid) received from an accredited training provider with a minimum of 12 months validity remaining.
