The Role

JCCA is ideally seeking an exceptional and innovative Head of Department – Mathematics to lead a high-performing learning area within Western Australia's only fully selective arts college.

Working within a Gifted and Talented arts environment, the successful applicant will lead the development and delivery of a comprehensive Mathematics program that supports student achievement, academic rigour, and the unique learning profile of our creatively-selected cohort. Students at the College balance demanding arts training with rigorous academic study, requiring a Mathematics program that is responsive, intellectually challenging, and designed to connect mathematical thinking with the curiosity and creative instincts that define our student community.

The Mathematics learning area encompasses Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), and General pathways across Years 7 to 12, including specialist extension opportunities for gifted and twice exceptional learners through the Academic Excellence Program (EEE) and Challenge programs. The successful applicant would ensure these pathways are strategically aligned, coherently delivered, and contribute to high levels of student participation, achievement, and confidence in mathematics.

The successful applicant would be accountable for the leadership, management, and performance of the Mathematics learning area. They will lead the alignment of the College Business Plan into a clear operational plan, alongside Department of Education priorities and policies. They should lead programs that support the learning and wellbeing demands of students engaged in intensive arts training — recognising that academic balance, workload management, and authentic mathematical engagement are critical to sustaining student participation and success across all year levels.

The role ideally requires the capacity to lead and manage staff delivering a range of courses and programs, ensuring consistent curriculum delivery, quality teaching practice, and improved student outcomes. This includes leading performance management and development processes in accordance with Departmental policy and building the instructional leadership capacity of the team.
