As the Deputy Chief Pilot (Rotary Wing) with the WA Police you will gain a range of training and experiences that are not available with other employers. You will have the opportunity to support the TRG, assist police patrols and winch in night operations using Night Vision Goggles; Be involved in tactical flying operations with the TRG including assaults and live fire missions; Assist the Water Police and perform Search and Rescue roles on both land and sea throughout the State; Conduct day and night patrols to assist police on the ground, detect traffic offenders and locate stolen cars; Conduct drug detection and eradication operations; Air ambulance backup; Be involved in air surveillance operations and K9 transport and deployment.
Rostered for day, afternoon and night shift and may be required to work outside these shifts to meet operational contingencies. Shifts worked in excess of normal hours of duty will be remunerated accordingly.
The incumbent, due to operational business needs, may be required to participate in an On Call Duty Roster and will be required to work within flight and duty provisions of Civil Aviation Safety Authority statutes and requirements.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of all rotary wing aircraft operated by the Police Air Wing by piloting the aircraft in accordance with the Civil Aviation Regulations, the Civil Aviation Orders and Western Australian Police Air Wing Operations Manual. Conducts check and training of rotary wing pilots on all facets of Air Wing helicopter operations when required.
SPECIALIST PRE-REQUISITE
It is a requirement that the position holder is successful in obtaining and maintaining a NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 1 security clearance for the duration of their appointment in the position.

Possession of an Air Transport Pilot Licence (helicopter).

Holder of a Night VFR endorsement.

Holder of a current Australian Aviation Medical (Class 1).

ESSENTIAL WORK RELATED REQUIREMENTS

Completed at least 3 Command Instrument Rating (CIR) renewals

2000 hours total helicopter experience of which 1000 hours must be Pilot In Command (PIC) and 500 hours must be as PIC of a twin engine helicopter

Proficient knowledge of the Australian Civil Aviation Regulations and Orders

Written and verbal communication skills

DESIRABLE WORK RELATED REQUIREMENTS

Holder of (or have held) a helicopter Check and Training approval or a military equivalent

Minimum of 12 months experience in commercial operations

Possession of a BK117 and/or AS365 endorsement

Possesses a current Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) rating

Possesses a Night Vision Goggles (NVG) endorsement

Possesses a winching endorsement qualification

Possesses a Fast Roping endorsement qualification

Possesses a Low Flying Endorsement (LFE) certification

OTHER CONDITIONS
Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies throughout the metropolitan area. In addition to this, should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position, then the panel may select another suitable applicant from this selection process. Both of these options remain valid for a period of twelve (12) months from the initial date of the appointment.
Integrity and criminal checks will be conducted if the recommended applicant for this position is not current WA Police employee. Any relocation costs associated with appointment to this position may be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
