The Chief Mental Health Advocate is an independent statutory role established under the Mental Health Act 2014 (the Act) to provide support, advocacy and rights protection for people who are deemed "identified persons" under that Act (involuntary mental health patients, residents of psychiatric hostels etc). The Chief Mental Health Advocate engages Mental Health Advocates under a contract for services and Advocates visit "identified persons" at mental health services (eg authorised mental health wards, psychiatric hostels and emergency departments) or in the community. Whilst the work is challenging, Advocates are rewarded with a culture that is focused on achieving quality outcomes for people in a vulnerable situation.
The Position
The Mental Health Advocacy Service is seeking a Specialist Aboriginal Mental Health Advocate to provide advocacy principally for people who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and are deemed "identified persons". MHAS considers that being Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for the Aboriginal Advocate position as per s 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984. Advocates do not work from an office but have training, support and guidance primarily from a Senior Advocate.
