The Role and our Branch
The Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Directorate is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and committed Senior Consultant to join our team. We are seeking culturally responsive officers who are committed to equity, anti-racism and systems thinking.
The Senior Consultant demonstrates the attributes of cultural responsiveness and assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies, initiatives and approaches that strengthen the wellbeing, engagement and achievement of Aboriginal students. This includes contributing to system strategy and system input into whole-of-government initiatives to strengthen outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people.

The successful applicant will have the ability to think strategically and work collaboratively in a small team environment. Applicants will ideally have experience in a policy or project management role, well developed written communication skills and experience in the preparation of complex advice to senior management.
Important to this role is providing advice and guidance to stakeholders, including schools and central and regional staff, to support the provision of culturally responsive approaches to the research, design and delivery of policies, programs and services across the Department.
The Aboriginal Education Teaching and Learning Directorate leads and influences the development of cultural responsiveness across the organisation. Our objective is to ensure that the research, design, delivery and evaluation of policies, programs and services are informed by whole-of-government priorities including the Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy 2021-2029 and the Department’s the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.

- Demonstrated substantial knowledge and understanding of Western Australia’s public education system and operations at a central, regional and school level.
- Demonstrated highly developed verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build partnerships and integrate services both within and beyond the Department.
- Demonstrated highly developed written communication, including experience in the preparation of reports, briefing and other documentation.
- Demonstrated highly developed research, analytical and conceptual skills, including the ability to deal effectively with change and generate innovative solutions.
- Demonstrated highly developed planning and organisation skills, including the ability to identify priorities and meet deadlines.

Eligibility and Training Requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
- obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal Cultural Appreciation course
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
- the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
- the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
