The Role and our Branch

The Financial Planning and Resourcing is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and experienced Budget Officer in the Budget Strategy and Resourcing branch.

The Budget Officer will prepare, analyse and regularly review components of the Department’s budget and forward estimates as part of the Government’s Mid-Year Review and Budget Process. You will also assist with the preparation of the Budget Papers and supporting information for the budget estimates hearings, and the annual estimates for disclosure in the Annual Report.

You will prepare and process budget adjustments in the Treasury’s Strategic Information Management System. You will also develop and maintain financial models and reconciliations.

In this role, you are required to maintain current knowledge of and assess financial implication for changes in the Australian Accounting Standards, Financial Management Act 2006 and Treasurer’s Instructions

  1. Practical knowledge of the Financial Management Act 2006 and substantial experience in accounting, budgeting and resource management in a large and complex agency.
  2. Well-developed skills and practical experience in operating complex computerised financial management systems, reporting tools and spreadsheets.
  3. Well-developed conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to provide innovative thinking in developing and implementing solutions to complex problems and issues.
  4. Well-developed verbal and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work cooperatively with others in a team environment and to build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  5. Well-developed written communication skills, including experience in the preparation of reports and responses to Ministerial requests and briefings.

Eligibility and Training Requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • possess or demonstrate progression towards a tertiary qualification in accounting, business, finance or related area or equivalent considerable experience
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance before commencing employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • complete
    • the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
    • training specific to this role required by Department policy; and
    • the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy.
