North East Metropolitan Language Development Centre (NEMLDC) is seeking to establish a pool of Support Officers - Speech and Language for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2022 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2023. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2022 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2023.

The Support Officer - Speech and Language will work as a part of a collaborative team in the Outreach Service. As a Speech and Language Support Officer you will be responsible for providing consultancy and professional learning to regional and school communities in the area of oral language foundations and literacy development, and supporting policy and procedures for the identification, referral, and educational planning for students with speech and language needs.

The Speech and Language Support Officer should work well in a team environment and be able to collaborate well with schools and internal and external service providers regarding language/literacy programs and service provision. In this role you will ideally participate in professional learning activities, liaise with organisations, and research institutions to maintain and develop professional, up to date skills.

NEMLDC provides a state-wide service for students with speech and language difficulties. It includes a direct service for students (K – 2) enrolled in the Language Development Centre and an Outreach Service. The Outreach Service provides support to mainstream schools in the North Metropolitan Region and the Wheatbelt. Travel will be required by the suitable applicants to fulfil this component of the role.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Knowledge and understanding of issues relating to speech and/or language and learning outcomes.
  • Ability to develop, implement, monitor and review the delivery of professional support in language and literacy development.
  • Negotiation, consultation and interpersonal skills with proven ability in working collaboratively and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of people across settings.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including effective facilitation skills and the ability to prepare professional tools.
  • Well-developed research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify issues, devise plans and apply strategies to address them.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment
  • Undertake travel to regional areas including overnight stays.
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
