The School of Special Educational Needs: Disability (SSEND) is seeking a dedicated and dynamic leader to join the Leadership Team as Coordinator, Consulting Teacher Service - Disability.

SSEND operates within a federation of four schools including School of Special Educational Needs: Medical and Mental Health, the School of Special Educational Needs: Sensory and the School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement to coordinate support for schools where possible and to share resources and expertise.

SSEND provides state wide support to schools to maximise learning outcomes for students with disability and learning difficulties. We provide consultancy services to educators, contextualised and evidence based professional learning, online research, information, resources and practical support. SSEND is committed to building the capacity of teachers and school based staff to deliver effective classroom programs that value the diversity of students in inclusive learning environments.

The Coordinator, Consulting Teacher Service - Disability manages a team of consulting teachers and is required to assist with strategic planning, implementation and review of all priorities and goals of the School Plan including three key foci: strategic service delivery; workforce development and productive relationships/partnerships. They manage the review of employee performance and support professional development. As a key member of the school's leadership team, they are responsible for assigned portfolios, planning committees, and partnerships with Networks, other agencies and business units.

Effective coordination and leadership of complex case management is central to this position. The successful applicant is required to have a high standard of teaching and learning skills and experience across all ages to support students with disability and additional needs. The successful applicant will have a strong understanding of schools and an advanced ability to establish productive working relationships with schools and networks. The successful applicant will have the ability to lead, communicate and coordinate support effectively including coordination of complex case management across the Schools of Special Educational Need and other Statewide Services directorates.

The successful applicant will have the ability to demonstrate innovative, bold and creative solutions and respond effectively within short timelines and a high-pressure environment. As such, applicants should be flexible, able to work both collaboratively and independently and be able to contribute to the work of SSEND in a range of areas. As part of the executive team, the suitable applicants will contribute and provide collaborative leadership to support the development of ongoing service priorities. Demonstrated knowledge and application of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be highly regarded.

The position will be metro based and requires regular work across a number of metropolitan and regional locations throughout the state. This may involve some overnight stays and travel. Suitable applicants should have a valid 'C' class driver's license.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • High level professional knowledge and capability to develop, coordinate and deliver educational programs, that incorporate evidence based pedagogy and best practice to support high level of educational outcomes for students with disability.
  • Highly developed leadership skills, including the ability to effectively manage teams, deliver positive outcomes and manage physical and financial resources.
  • High level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with people at all levels.
  • High level conceptual and analytical skills, together with the proven ability to manage complex cases and provide innovative solutions to complex problems and issues.

Employees will be required to:

  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy


Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
