Hedland Senior High School (SHS) is seeking a dedicated Student Support Officer to join their friendly team to support students across the school and specifically to the Success Program as part of the 2021 – 2023 BHP Pilbara Education Partnership

This Partnership is the largest corporate and Government partnership undertaken in regional Western Australia. The partnership between the Department of Education and BHP has been in place since 2005. The purpose of the Partnership is to enhance education services and improve education outcomes through a collective impact approach in Newman, Port Hedland, Onslow and surrounding areas within the Shire of East Pilbara and town of Port Hedland.

The Pathways aspect of the Partnership focuses on a strengthened community-based approach to ensuring all students are prepared for life beyond school by building skills and capabilities for employment, further training or further study.

The Successful applicant will have good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with other staff and service providers.  They will have effective planning and organisation skills and will be able to use their initiative to assist with seeking out opportunities for community, sports engagement for students and families. This role involves providing one-on-one support for students and families, assisting students to access the ability to participate in community programs, in particular community sport.

Hedland SHS, located in South Hedland in the Pilbara, is an Independent Public School catering for students from Years 7 to 12. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to Commencement of employment
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
