Our School

Kalumburu Remote Community School (RCS) is located in the East Kimberley and caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. The school currently has 0-3 KindiLink program, two Early Years classes, three composite Primary classes and two composite Secondary classes.

From 2019, our school has been part of the Kimberley Schools Project (KSP), a federally funded initiative established to strengthen teaching pedagogy and improve outcomes for Kimberley students. The four pillars of the project are targeted teaching, better early years learning and care, regular attendance, and increased student and community engagement. Kalumburu RCS receives support in the form of professional learning, coaching, and funding through its participation in the project.

Our staff at Kalumburu RCS are a positive, supportive team and we have strong external supports from KSP and SSEN:BE coaches. Community participation and involvement in the school is actively encouraged through weekly assemblies and termly Stronger Smarter Days.

Kalumburu’s Location

Kalumburu, meaning 'Path by the River’ or ‘River Crossing', is the most northerly Aboriginal Community in Western Australia and is situated on Kwini Country on the banks of the King Edward River. The nearest townships to Kalumburu are Kununurra (565 km Southeast), Wyndham (560 km Southeast) and Derby (650 km West). Road access to the region is dependent on seasonal conditions and Kalumburu is often inaccessible by road for four to six months of the year. Alternative access is by air from Kununurra, and supplies are regularly delivered by sea.

The Community of Kalumburu currently numbers around 500 people and is serviced by the school, community clinic, community store and an administration office providing postal, banking and Centrelink services.

Kalumburu provides many opportunities for outdoor recreational activities including fishing, camping and 4-wheel driving.

The Role

This role will suit someone who is highly motivated, relationship-focused, and passionate about creating exciting learning experiences to ignite a desire to learn in students. The school is seeking an Early Childhood Specialist, though teachers with other Primary backgrounds are welcome to apply.

The Ideal Teacher

The successful applicant will ideally be a conscientious, flexible, and innovative teacher who is committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal students. You will ideally be actively involved both within the school and wider community, highly reflective of your teaching practices and willing to collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external networks to establish strong community partnerships.

The successful applicant will ideally possess the professional knowledge and experience to deliver an engaging and relevant curriculum using a positive, student-focused approach, including Targeted Teaching and EDI in English and Mathematics. A willingness to learn and embed the school’s whole-school programs is essential. Programs include Let’s Decode, Daily Reviews, Zones of Regulation and Protective Behaviours. You will also be involved in the implementation of Two-way and on-Country learning.

Strong behaviour support capabilities, grounded in genuine, positive relationships, are vital in this context. The successful applicant will adopt the whole school Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach to behaviour management and embed trauma-informed approaches and cultural awareness in the classroom and whole-school environment. Positive interpersonal skills and a commitment to maintaining our positive staff culture are essential, and personal resilience will support your success in living and working in a very remote location.
